Algebra - Sticking With The Times
Algebra - Sticking With The TimesToday's students are being taught more than just history, math and science, and they are also being challenged in algebra. The changes in the curriculum mean that their algebra is much more complex than ever before.Arithmetic is the foundation of algebra. Not only does it include addition and subtraction, but also advanced features such as multiplication, division and percent. In addition, algebra requires students to understand numbers and to apply a greater number of ideas to them.Beginning students may need to use graphing or factor options for some of their basic addition problems. These should be carefully chosen so that the student can quickly see what works best for them.Student-centered math involves engaging students in the process of learning, including how the student learns best. There is no one right way to learn math. Many factors influence how students learn, including the types of instruction given, how the student learns, and the stud ent's individual preferences. In other words, students are different and so should their learning. As a result, changes in curriculum require teachers to assess the learning goals of the student, which determine the curriculum to be used in the classroom. Sometimes this includes working with teachers on a customized program that will help students reach their math skills goals.Algebra may require students to look at more variables than in past years. Other options might include choosing which step of an equation to use based on the shape of the problem, which can take a few more strategies. Another option is to use several strategies in the same step and apply them to the equations.Resources can be made available to students. This can include books, software, internet programs, music, flash cards, games, and art. Students can also be encouraged to develop creative ways to communicate their solutions to equations and problems. They can also be provided with more creative ways to expre ss their answers.Algebra can be difficult, but it is necessary for all students to get a good education. It requires the student to understand concepts such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication. When this is mastered, the student will be able to move on to more advanced areas of algebra.
